In Your Words

First I would like to thank the ingenious Mdm Samm for this inspirational theme and  our lovely host and head cheerleader, Linda .  I share the day with these wonderful word players and I hope you take the time to visit everyone:

IN MY OWN WORDS

I knew immediately what I wanted to do with this project as it was something already on my mind.  A project that was a mix of words and fabrics that was me, in my own words.  The faithful tiny scraps that I so love to play with and the challenge of working from just 'that special scrap drawer'.

Selecting a block that I love to make with this mixture of scrappy fun - the framed floating star.  I wanted the centers to be my focal of the growing list of words that were formulating as I went from fabric to machine - yes, not a word or two, but a list of words!

How quickly those stars and words piled up and there was an urgency.  In the middle of all this was the horrid news of Sandy Hook.  It made the need for this project to come to fullfillment on a more personal level.  And I mini stippled all those stars with that word list at my side and so many thoughts in my head.

Even when my faithful helper decided this was a good napping spot in the middle of free-motion quilting all those words into the sashings - it did not matter to me.  I think my sweet Bella sensed what was emoting from me - my medicine pet that she is.  She made me take a break, to breath, to calm.  And it didn't matter that those words were a bit wobbly - my hand writing is a bit demented anyway - but I filled all those sashings with those special words that were my family, me, home, and life.

Of course, I love to use something a little more untraditional for binding.  Polka dots, stripes, plaids are all fun, but I wanted something special to go with the 'In My Own Words' quilt.

PINETREES - SUNFLOWERS - HORSES - ATHLETE - BRICK HOUSE - BLUE -
FARM - LILACS- SKIPPER (farm dog)

GOOD LUCK - PLAIDS - BASKETS - CUPS - NATURE - SUNSHINE - APPLES - CHILDREN - POLKA DOTS - MEMORIES (quilt date)

Yes, a quilt evolved that was a need to express myself .  Not a lot know but I have a grand daughter that I don't get to see very often.  With the Holidays in bloom, my Mom's health scare,  and then a disaster thrown in - I have wanted to make a 'memory' quilt that will be saved for her.  (No I am not ill - just that the year 2013 is the year of the BIG 60 and that is a bit of a scare.)  When she is old enough, a gift to share a part of something missed over  time.  My daughter is going to hold this for Lily's 16th birthday and share the story of it.

Thank you for letting me share my WORDS - maybe there is a word quilt inside you.

GIVEAWAY - I have a layercake of 'Noteworthy' by SweetWater for Moda.  Simply leave a comment and be sure I have a way of contacting you. I will ship international.  Comments will be left open until Midnight (EST) Jan. 16th (Weds.) and the winner announced the next day.

Sewingly Yours,
Sharon

That is a sweet story. Have you written a letter to go with your quilt? "Hearing your voice" through your words and how you express the feelings behind them can be such a sweet treasure.

Sharon,
That is such a beautiful quilt! I'm so glad that you made it. I get really scared of getting older too, and the numbers can have a big effect on me sometimes. I try to remember age is just a number, and life is what you make of it. I really hope I get around to making a quilt that is about me, that I can pass down to my children. Thanks so much for sharing!!

sew clever with the use of scraps -- this is inspiration for one of my goals that I set this year -- use more scraps and make wall hangings that are inspirational. I look forward ot seeing the new projects throughout the year.

(Ps-- I to often get kitties in shipping boxes when that's clearly not what I ordered. Let me know if you find a way to aleviate this occurance.)

You did an amazing amount of work on this quilt and put a lot of thought into it. Congratulations on a really special heirloom for your granddaughter. It makes me think of a project I'm beginning to prepare for of making an I-spy style quilt with the feature fabrics in each block highlighting things from my parents' married life. :-)
