I would like to share my 'confetti' block with you today. The fun thing with this block is that you can math it to any size you like and even a great block to use up those left over HSTs.
I wanted to use up left overs from other quilts and since I use Kona as my staple solids, I knew that my blacks and whites would all match. Since I wanted this a large block quilt for the modern look, I made my HSTs 8.5" unfinished.
Another fun part of play with this block is you can place your side sashings either on the dark side or the light side of the HST. I chose to frame up the dark side. I used a 4.5" wide cut, but here you can play again.
I chose to set my blocks alternating points up and down, but you can really play with these and scatter them any which way.
With this setting, the only seams I had to match were the block edge seams. I added a 4.5" wide border around the entire quilt. Some scattered smaller HSTs in the border would have been cool as well.
There is a lot of wide open spaces to play with quilting, but I stuck with straight line. Some black thread going with the flow of the HSTs and then some white pencil tracks to fill in.
I set the camera light change so the quilting would show on the back, which is actually the Kona Black. AND yes, black catches every bit of dust, thread, cat hair, etc...
This finished at 56" square - either a large wall hanging or nice couch throw.
Those of you who are way better at EQ than I can certainly play with this one - would love to see and share them.

I love this idea for using up those scrap HSTs! I have a small pile of red ones accumulating next to my machine right now. I am seeing a scrap quilt of different size blocks of different colors in my future. Thank you for this block design ... :-) Pat

Love your quilt - thanks for the quick tutorial & the quilting suggestion. I made a D9P black & white quilt with hot pink as the center square. I added a solid black border which I need to remove because it dulled it down.

What a fun quilt. I also use straight-line quilting with my walking foot when I quilt. It is so much easier to feed through my sewing machine than free motion quilting. Thanks for the chance at those lovely pink prints.
Love the two color idea, I am sure to try it, love the idea of adding hot pink to the mix as well.
You may have just giving me the plan for a two color crayon challenge project I need to make. My colors are medium gray and lime green and I just wasn't coming up with anything. Hope you aren't too snowed in. We're in Texas visiting family so we missed the whole storm.

Clever use of HST's for leftovers or any print combo. I like the eye appeal and few seams to match for a quickie quilt.
I really like this, Sharon. The stark contrast of the black and white makes this pop and the quilting adds so much to that contrast. It would be fun to see the quilting lines done in that hot pink too.
I love the way the triangles look as if they are blowing across the quilt. Leila Gardunia had a Scrappy Triangle Quiltalong in 2017 featuring paper foundations for 6 inch triangles. She still offers them free to anyone who signs up to follow her blog. I just downloaded them, but couldn't imagine making a whole quilt with them. This might be a fun way to use them.
The quilt is reminiscent of Flying Starlings. I think you did a wonderful job capturing the black and white!

What a fun quilt! I know that many people do not like working with HST, but I love it. They are so versatile and can add so much fun to just about any project. I think your quilting is perfect for this project to. Simple, yet effective. :-)
Your poodles are darling!! They reminded me that I have about 15 of them waiting in their box for their time to shine. They are fun to make!!My original plan for this hop was to finish my poodle quilt too but then life took over.
