I would like to thank CAROL for organizing and hosting this wonderful Hop each year at this time. This year was a little change to the game by not just offering a cookie recipe, but also a tradition and/or a holiday quilt.
I will admit that I am not a baker. I was able to handle the job good enough when my kids were young and we made the most basic cookies. I think good cookies are a real art and those that make those OMG treats are true artists. So what's a non-baker doing in a cookie exchange?
Well, there are a lot of no bake recipes out there that help us non-bakers share during the holiday seasons. This is one of my favorites as it has all my fav bits of season tastes rolled into one cookie. You can substitute your favorite nut if you don't like pecans.
The tradition that has been passed down thru our family is putting an orange into the toe of each stocking. My daughter is following still with this tradition with her own children. There are many stories to the 'why' of this tradition, but it had always meant filling the New Year with riches. Oranges were hard to come by at the time of year or even during the war(s) and depression. An orange was a treasure as well as nuts and a little bit of chocolate (same reasons). Also, an orange could be shared. With it's many sections, it could be divided up for many to enjoy - encouraging share with what you have.
I am not one who likes to work with traditional holiday fabrics. I've been wanting to play with Kaffe Fassett for some time and this Hop came to the perfect match. The pattern is The No Bake Jolly Bar Quilt - how cool is that. Jolly Bars are 5" x 10" strips that come in bundles of 42. My Kaffe was 6" x WOF, but it worked and you can certainly cut your own stash.
I had fun quilting this with a lot of straight lines in different color threads matching colors in the prints - and a lot of white thread, too.

I love all no bake cookies. We used to have something very similar to this when I was youbg. My mom always put a marischino cherry in the middle. Thanks for the great memory.

My mothers family from Connecticut also had the tradition of an orange in the stocking. She was born in 1906 so it is a very old tradition.

No bake cookies -- now that's a great idea! The ingredients sound yummy. I love that quilt and the quilting. I really need to up my Kaffe fabric stash (I only have one or two FQs, so maybe not a stash - ha). Those bright blues and aqua fabrics are so fresh and pretty!
I'm glad you shared with us that you are not inclined to bake, now that my work schedule does not permit time in the kitchen (lots of store bought in my home now)...it is nice to see others revealing that being in the kitchen is not a shameful thing ;)

Those snowball cookies look wonderful--just looking at them makes my mouth water. The jolly bar quilt is awesome--I need to make one of those. We always had an orange and some nuts in our stockings too. I kept that up as long as our girls were still at home, but I don't think they do that for their children. Love coconut so this cookie idea sounds yummy. The Kaffe Fassett fabric makes a great quilt and shows nicely in this color scheme.

I've not done as much baking as I did years ago, so those no bake snowballs would be a perfect way for me to have a yummy treat. An orange was always included in my Christmas stocking as a child, but I never knew why...thanks for the info. I love your no bake quilt and the stitching is a beautiful finish for it! I think it's wonderful that your daughter is keeping the "orange in the toe" tradition alive. My father always spoke of how delighted he was to find an orange in his stocking when he was a boy (especially since he didn't get much else). I love theno bake quilt. Hi Sharon! I have a few snowball recipes but not one with pineapple, coconut and pecans. YUMMY. What a fun combination. It sounds a bit tropical, and totally delicious. I'll definitely give this a try - no-bake is a nice addition to all the other sweets. Plus, this must be gluten-free as well. I'm trying to be more focused and concerned about that for some family members. The No Bake Jolly Bar quilt turned out lovely! I love the different colored threads you quilted it with. Just perfect to continue the fun but not distract from all the quilty goodness. I remember hearing about the orange in the toe of my older sibling's stockings when they were young. I'm not a coconut fan so I'll skip your no-bake cookie. Those Connecting Threads fabrics look delicious. Lots of dots which would work with anything. I don't tend to buy pre-cuts because there's only a few pieces that I like, but this one has a good mix. Stay warm. Hope the car has been fixed.

Sharon, that's the perfect kind of cookie for me! I'm not a fan of coconut, but I'm thinking roll these around in a shallow pan of dark chocolate chips that are melted, and it could be the best truffle of the season! Or in those little sugar dots or jimmies, or a crushed sugar bomb cereal! This is a great and simple recipe. Thank you! Thanks also for the chance to win the lovely fabric. Your no-bake cookies sound awesome!! All the ingredients I love, but unfortunately most of my family does not love pineapple or coconut! But I'm going to try them anyway. Maybe my son-in-love and possibly one of the twins will eat them. They eat most anything!!

Wasn't able to visit yesterday but am now catching up. I love the tradition of an orange in the stocking. We always got an orange and an apple. Mom always said as she grew up they only got an orange at Christmas - they were too expensive and very, very hard to come by.
