Tuesday Archives

Val's Quilting Studio

This weeks Tuesday Archives is 'Bindings' and 'Birds' .  We all do miles of bindings and I admit, I don't really show case them.  I prefer to hand stitch my bindings, but charity, utility, and baby quilts I like to do (and it's usually requested) by machine as they will get a lot of washing and wear.   But I do have a Bird wallhanging to share.

I don't have a lot to show on this piece which was originally post HERE in 2010 shortly after just starting to blog.  I learned to paper piece with this project (began quilting in 2009).  Yes, learned!!  I went for it all even back then - some of these have over 100 pieces. Even back then I researched each of the birds and their habitat.  I took sometimes months to find just the right fabrics - mix of batiks, prints, and hand dyed. This is a Silver Linings Original pattern - if you sign up for her newsletter you get her BOM free for the month - currently another bird bom for 2014.

I used this piece with my Pets on Quilts-2011 and you can see more of it HERE

Be sure to visit others who are showing off their archives today at Val's Quilting Studio

Boxes

Some time ago I shared the back of a quilt that I was testing the pattern for.  Well, the quilt is now public and released, so I can flip it over to share.

This is 'Boxes' by Bea Lee at BeaQuilter.  This is what I call a weekend quilt or for you speedsters - make it in a day - really!

Three fabrics - easy to read instructions - and play with that layout.  Would make for a fun 'sit-n-sew' group project.

I used a black with scattered multi-color bones, cheddar that has tiny black paws (really), and Kona white.  The back is a super sized box block and then improved with what variety of doggie theme prints I had.  Longarm quilted by Ron Lower with a panto of bones, paws, 'woof', and 'bark' - love it!!

And hop over to BEA'S as she is having a give away for the pattern - actually she will be picking three winners!!

Let's Book It Winner

There were a lot of great projects this month.  Love the group who is working together on the Underground Railroad quilt - always more fun to sew along with friends.  And I got a kick in the pants with someone mentioning the rummaging thru all those files and printed off 'want to make' files.  I have three 3-ring notebooks - seriously!!  And I remembered (and found!) one in particular that is May's project. Thank you to all of you who linked up and spreading the word.

The winner of the Quilt Barn pin and Wedding Ring Charm is:
6. Dasha - Patching Pixies
I will be contacting her for mailing information.

Remember it's about using those books, patterns, magazines, saved on-line patterns, print outs - dust them off, get inspired, have fun. Please remember to show your source of publication - it's proper and it might jog someones' memory that they have that on their shelf. I have been slowly working on my April 'Let's Book It' inbetween assisting my SIL with her large quilt - YEAH - she finished today!!  Now my large table is ready for sandwiching some quilts - my weekend project.  Hope you have a great weekend!

April Goals

I love how this is working for me.  As much as we all love starting something new, there is that hidden project that needs it's time to shine, also.

'Countdown to Christmas' done in Midwinter Reds line was my March 'Something Old' and pleased that it is now ready for quilting.  It is bagged with backing and batt for the longarmer (someone new).  I hope to have it delivered to her in the next few days.

I felt horrible when I found these blocks.  My 'Something Old' for April project.  These were for Bea's Scrappy Chain QAL.  I need to check the pattern, layout, and count blocks (may need a couple more made) and get busy putting this into a quilt top.

I actually had listed my Book It project as also my 'Something New' project, but that seems cheeky with all the NEW things I started in March.  So I am using my lozanges blocks for the new leader/ender project with Bonnie Hunter - you can find them under her 'free pattern' file.

For April's 'Something New' I will be using the new Triangle QAL (see button on side bar).  I've had this FQ bundle of 'London' by Free Spirit that I won almost a year ago.  The first assignment was cutting all the triangles.

See, another new start - love it!!  I will be using my Monthly Doll Quilt Swap Group project for this one.  This month's theme is 'Diamonds are Forever' and my partner and I agreed to stay on theme.

I've been very pleased with the growth each month - thank you ladies for participating.  You can see the March link up HERE.

Yep - I'm going large for a change.  We do have to challenge ourselves.  I love working with small pieces, so doing a large block will be my challenge.  I have some bright and fun left over FQs (I have some more fun polka dots to pull).  This book caught my eye as an 'I have to have this one' and it sat.  It was the cover quilt and that is the project I am using for April.

A few other projects in the mix:

Relaxing Round Robin
Rainbow Challenge Blocks
Monthly Christmas Project
Simply Small monthly project
Get at least one of my three charity quilts quilted for Hands2Help
once Marcia returns from her visit abroad (loving on that grand babe), we start plotting out this year's May For Me

AND if the weather improves - get lots of walking in - I was released by my surgeon at Tuesday's visit!!
