2nd BlogAversary

First, I would like to announce the winner of the Traveling Stash Box - Judy of Scrappy Pieces.  I will send her off an e-mail for information and get this box passed right on.  Thank you all for joining in the fun - you can find all the other boxes and their updates on Cherise's blog - Sewingly Along.

This is one of my wins of the Silent Auction at the weekend show.  I love this chunky churn dash quilt and had some ladies assist me in trying to date this quilt.  Either later 1890's or early 1900's.

Here is a close up of the hand work on this quilt.  The 'binding' is a turn of the back to the front, so a single layer which has shown some wear (as you can see) in a few places.  There are two small 'rust' spots, but other than that this quilt is just wonderful.  And my bid - $35

Oh, Bella, had to be cute.  The cats aren't allowed in this room and soon as she heard me un-latch the door - swoop!!  This is the other quilt I won.  A little more worn with one larger 'rust' spot (you can see on the one edge in the middle)  And the white backing turned to the front as binding - very little wear.

A little close up of the hand work and those lovely indigo Ohio Stars.  The batt shows bits of  cotton seed in the thinly combed batt - yes, we snipped a few threads to check the batting - have to remember to repair.  This caught my eye with the indigo and the stitch - the same as the family quilts I showed in the antigue quilt show here.  So places this around 1840's. These two quilts were given to the church for the silent auction annonymously, but I did manage to find out after - yes, a very distant relation.  They are both back home!  This quilt 's bid - $50.

Now for the BlogAversary give away.  Yes, two layer cakes in honor of my two new quilts.  Little Black Dress and Oh Deer - oh, I have some of these for myself, no worries.  I will pick one USA winner and one International winner.  Must be a follower and tell me where you are from (so I know which drawing) and which layer cake you would love to win.  I will leave the comments open until October 22nd (Monday) midnight (EST) and announce the winner on the following Tuesday.

Sewingly Yours,
Sharon

So much history behind those quilts. Wouldn't it be amazing to know who had been wrapped up in them, and who had been comforted by the snuggly warmth of a quilt. And such good condition for something so old. I would never come across anything like that here!

Congrats on your blogoversary. I love Little Black Dress and have held off buying some until now...and you know I am in NZ

Sue said...

I'll try again, first comment didn't seem to "take"! Congrats on your two year anniversary and on the wonderful quilts you won. I have two antique quilts that I should take somewhere and have repaired...well worn but much loved. I am from Florida and love Oh Deer. Drop by my blog and enter the latest Traveling Stash if you have a chance.

Happy Blog Anniversary! I adore antique quilts. I purchased an 1880`s indigo quilt from a dear 93 year old friend for 50.00 and then a sweet depression era quilt for $5.00 at a local yard sale. I love it when I find the batting with seeds. Old quilts can be found for a song in our little town. Folks pass on and the relatives want to get rid of the "junk". So sad, but a thrill for me being able to save a piece of someone`s heart. Loved your post and the pictures.

Catherine said...

Almost forgot your Giveaway! Your Oh Deer layer cake would be my preference. I live in Arizona.
