Scrappy Wednesday

The plan is to get the next two rows sewn on the scrappy rail fence blocks.  This is another way to make a log cabin.

I'll work these tid bits as leader enders with those rows and then play with them for a while on their own.  These are 1.5" squares and the barrel was stuffed!  I have a plan for these 16-patches - long term plans.

There needs to be a trip to the grocery store.  For some of you that is trauma, but we are lucky to have a nice little shop just 2 miles up the road.  Well stocked, lovely people, not crowded, and patrons respectful.

Our area of NYS is headed into Phase #2 and more things will be opening.  I know a lot of people are not jumping into things and being very good at following all the rules in our rural communities.  BUT, I can't wait to hug a few people!

Monday Making

Today will be a quiet day of prayer and respect.  Not only a tribute to our military, but to all individuals who have been on the front lines during this time.  To those we have lost at war and those whom have been lost to a silent unknown.  May you all soar on Eagle's Wings.

In such a day, I need a project that doesn't require a lot of thought.  So I have pulled the scrappy rail fence project.  Hopefully I won't stitch too many in the wrong direction.

It's Cool To Be Square

I have two go-to square patterns:  the Postage Stamp and the Boxed Square.  For this Hop I chose the Boxed Square because it is so easy to Math any size and can be very versatile in design.  Use a Jelly ROll,  your own strips, showcase a special fabric in the center, or use a color for a very pretty monochromatic quilt.

  

I had some small pieces of vintage Kitty fabric, but not enough to make a whole quilt.  That is what is fun with this Boxed method - you can change out some of your 'squares'.  Some Boxed squares, some Improve squares, and some full pieces squares.

The traditional setting is square/square, but you can change it up.  This was to dark with all the black and brown, so I went with a real POP of color for sashing and cornerstones.  This will be one of my Hands2Help quilts, so I want it fun for a child.

It's backed with a lime green and white check flannel - a snuggle quilt that I am sure a child is going to love napping with.

Then I remembered I had a quilt top  made some time ago.  Again to use up some vintage fabric (The Apple Farm) bits that were paired with some left over  JR strips.

This HOP was a good excuse to finally get 'Caramel Apple' finished.

I even used up some vintage yardage for the back.  Harvest Time is now off the shelf and perfect for this quilt.

Squaring Up

Well, it took me four days to work thru that box of scraps.  All the lose stuff was pressed and chopped down into my barrel system.  Let's just say my 2" and 2.5" barrels are stuffed again, but I have a home for them.  Many items were re-bagged for future projects and some may get a date for some more chopping.

I did process and stitch some of the scraps for a new project and they will patiently wait as I plan to tackle a few quilts from the 'to-be-quilted' pile.  Yes, I want to finish more than I make - other wise that pile will never get smaller.

This is the little patootie that will adopt my stuffed barrels.  My granddaughter and her first quilt is finished.  My daughter (self taught thru the internet) ordered a FMQ foot and just went for it.  Leaves, flowers, and some McTavishing.  ANd notice the scrappy binding!  I think she is pretty pleased with her quilt.

This took us by surprise and held me up from cutting squares and quilting.  Yes, New York State had tornado storms sweep thru Friday and we were without power for some time.  Me and the furkids hunker down and quivered till things cleared.

Then I used this gorgeous vintage fabric for a backing for another project I pushed myself to finish for the upcoming HOP.

Scrappy Wednesday

Well I pulled that last box of scraps out.  It was gifted by a fellow Hall of Fame Inductee - Thank You Pat!.  I do remember I pulled all the yardage out of this first thing and most of that has been used up, but hasn't touched since.   A lot of things seperated by color or fabric lines and in zip lock baggies.

Scraps make me happy and if this box hold happiness, then it deserves to be played in now rather that later.  Luckily we are in one of the districts that is being allowed to re-open for Phase #1 of the NYS plan.  My start on this box is sort of a Phase 2 (1 was removing the largest pieces).  I will press and process all these bits down into my barrel system.  I actually find it very soothing to cut fabric no matter what size.  All of those happy fabrics will be used as squares in a project some where along the way.

AND speaking of squares, you don't want to miss the up-coming new HOP.  I used some vintage fabric and made something new for this.

Monday Making

For all the hype about the Storm Bomb we were suppose to get, I thought I better grab a quick Saturday morning photo of all the snow we got - before it was gone.  It was a bitter 28 degrees with strong winds though - brrr....  It is May, isn't it?

 

I'll be joining BETH with some Monday Making after taking the weekend away from the machine - housework had to be done.  Please check out the link up for lots of inspiration.  I just love the little blocks Beth has  in progress.

I'd like to get a start on my very large OMG project.  If I can get at least half together and clear the large table - then I can lay out the second half.  Then I'll stack and label rows to play with here and there thru the month until the two halves are ready to put together.

Whooping Friday

The last of the minis are finished other than the button eyes need to be sewn on.  That may be my only stitching today as I need to catch up on house work - yea, someone has to do it.

I wish there was more of that black aqua dotty fabric - there was just an inch left of the binding (sweating).

AND here is the empty old broken plastic tote.  After pulling the batiks there wasn't really much left that inspired one last project.  So that was all processed down into the scrap storage system.  They will find new life in another project at some point.

Have you developed this new skill?  I'm taking a couple of days away from stitching to concentrate on a few 'home' necessities.  Some of that is re-organizing the stash/project area with a better working list.  I've whittle down a lot of fabric.  My basics (white, off-white, muslin, black) are just about gone and as a scrap quilter, you need those to marry it all.  Black Kona has been depleted from the market since January - any black quilting fabric for that matter.  It's all making me be a little more creative, but it does add to that new skill.

An update on the 'Corona Village' - trees added and final border.  I have a rough draft of what is planned for this week (yeah, behind on that) and next week - which is the 'pause'.  I have a feeling it will be slow to open and I will work what ever comes into the addition within this piece.  (size - 24" x 25")

This is another reason for a couple days of re-org!  YES more snow for us with very cold temps.  Will it ever end?!!?

OMG - May 2020

It took me a while to select my goal for May as there is so many things I would like to progress.  But this one is taking space on my little side table that I want to set up my old Singer to dedicate for piecing while the Juki is on the large table for quilting.

Monday Making

I am still working out of that old plastic tote and finished up two more table toppers with the Civil War Fabrics.  The remaining strips have been packed up in my stash for a re-visit in the Fall.  This is the Moda Love Layer Cake pattern and comes in three sizes - using layer cake, or charm, or mini charm.  I use the minin charm size to use up those bits.

  
This is the project that Moe was helping to arrange.  Those little, bitty 1" strips that normal people throw away made for some cute tiny 4-patches.  I'm really in love with this one.  But I think I am ready to move on from the CW play.

You see I am down to this mix now, but there are plans for it.  First I pulled greens for my tree row on the Corona quilt and yellows for the new June hop.  There are some strips and pieces of batiks , but I am allergic to those so will bag them up pass them on when able.

The next project cut and ready to chain thru the machine.  Yes, I like to chain it all one right after another,  the challenge not to break the thread until the finish (or sneak a leader/ender in).

This is a block from the Moda Snap Shots QAL - 2015 - all the patterns are still there.  I saved the dog and cat block (in case they disappeared) and in my quest to get all my animal patterns done this year - well, puppy in a basket is ready for quilting.  And there was just enough of that dotty aqua/black (love it) to make the binding.

I am pulling fabrics for the Kitty on quilts - then I can quilt the two and do their bindings right up.

There is still lots of play in that old tote.
