Monday Making

I hope to get a few more of these done today.  This is a no rush project and I'll take a break here and there as I assess projects to work on during September.  

We experienced a week of alternating storm days with clear days.  A day to hide and a day to clean up.  The scary part was that the day of the land fall of Hurrican Laura was the 9th Anniversary of the devistation that Hurrican Ireen did to our Valley.  And yesterday we had an F-1 tornado go thru.  With these storms our temps have dropped into the low 70's and even 60's.  It's all a bit of a shock to the system.

A Scrappy Thursday

I did no sewing at all yesterday.  It was a full day in the kitchen processing vegies and getting them into the freezer.  Of course you then have a LOT of pots, pans, utensiles, etc.. that have to be washed up and an entire kitchen scrubbed down.

This was the small pile of fabrics in the little baggy in Mom's bagged quilt and was for a totally different project.

  
There were a lot of blades cut and partially pieced, but no pattern or template so I had no idea where this was going.  Sew - I just stitched them together and will turn this into a pillow top.

The rest of the pieces I will use for this block.  I know it as the Cactus Blossom, but could have other names.  I'm sure I can get 20 blocks from this pile and then can see what is in my stash (I know I have some of this) and get another 5 made as well as add to setting, borders.

My daughter sent me this - she's created a monster.  Hannah learning to use Mom's new super, duper new sewing machine.  I can't wait to see what she is creating here.

We are expecting some really bad storms today, but nothing compared to the Gulf.  My prayers are with all in this huge storm's path.

OMG - August 2020

I used the August OMG to push for another quilting finish on flimsy stuffed in that (bottomless) tote.  Well, actually that tote has found it's bottom finally.

The goal was to get this scrappy patriotic quilt finished for the Wounded Warriors Winter Games, but that has now been cancelled.  It will be held on for possible 2021 donation.

All the sashing and churns done with a stitch in the ditsh with a free form star inside each churn.

I had used this extra wide on a couple of quilts and had several large pieces from the cut offs.  Those were pieced to make the backing for this.  The binding came from the 'binding drawer' - all the navy blues for a scrappy binding to complete the quilt.

The August List Is Empty

I'm happy to say that the August list is completed, but then I am always stumped on what to do as I like to keep to the schedule.  This quilt jumped into the month unexpectantly, but finished.  This is the re-make of my Mom's quilt in a bag.

So glad I bought the whole 'what's left on the bold' of the green as I had enough to use for the back.  This is a much smaller quilt that my Mom likes to make, but I was using what was 'useable' in that bag and not add more to it.

The left overs - cut offs from the backing, about a FQ of muslin, and bits of the two florals.  All of this will get cut down into my barrel scrap system.

The utility quilt was finished off.

The backing was a yardage bag I picked up at a quilt show guild table a couple of years ago.  Just enough with the trim offs either in the string tote or cut down into the barrels.  Glad this one is off the shelf.

The low volumn postage stamp got quilted as well.

I would have liked something more on that light aqua for the back, but with Covid making us use what we have on hand, I used this extra wide chambrey blue.  I have enough of that left to use as a back on a baby quilt.  The binding on this one is the long trims of that gray floral backing from one of last month's quilts.  Yes, using it all up one way or the other.

I have one more quilt that was finished, but will share tomorrow for OMG.  I'm still doing well on getting four quilts completely finished each month for the year.  Next month I think I need to clean up a lot of small projects.  They will help to clear out the batting cut offs and small pieces of backing used up.

We had a horrid 4-hour storm whip thru here.  High winds, lightning that made my nerves peak (along with the furkids), sheets of rain.  I probably will be cleaning up a lot of debri and downed limbs tomorrow.

My prayers are with those who may be in the path(s) of the two hurricanes.  Be safe and well,

Whooping Friday

The 'new' version of my Mom's quilt in a bag.  Old non-useable fabrics removed, blocks remade, and mathing to be sure enough is left for border treatment.

Our weather has turned to a respectable 70's and I took Mom out for a drive and bit of retail therapy.  We visited The Quilt Zoo which is only about 1/2 hr. away.  Mom picked up a pretty Christmas panel with coordinates and this was my haul.

We went round and round over the selection for adding to the border/binding of this quilt and I finally landed with this smokey green.  "Williamsburg" by Windham Fabrics and at $4 yrd I took what was left on the bolt.

This is the plan and I hope to get it done this weekend - you know me and borders.  And that's FOUR borders!  As I said, the green will also be used for the binding and should pull it all together nicely.

This just is a 'because' purchase.  Because those butterflies and poppies caught my eye and heart.  "Poppy Promenade" by Kanvas.  The textured gray is actually a Moda - "True Luck" - and I may or may not use with this.  I have other grays and some reds that can be mixed with this, but I don't even have a concrete plan for this yet.

This awesome owl panel by Benartex which will be my give away for the Fall Hop in September.  I'll add some other goodies with it.

I don't like to use seasonal fabrics, but this panel caught my eye when I was helping Mom select her goodies.

My Brick House (sort of) and............

our Old Dairy Barn (that's not there any more)!  I have to make something of these for ME.  The other charming panel parts will be used in the Gift Hop in October.

And there was several yards of muslin purchased - backing for a couple of quilts.

We, also, stopped at a local farmer's maket to pick up some items for Mom.  I got some fresh, homemade bread (dried tomato, basil, and garlic) that was to die for!  I had a couple of slices with dinner - I had to slap my hands to keep from eating the whole thing.

It was a good day out!

Scrappy Wednesday

I'm going to assemble the Lincoln Quilt today.  All of the 16-Patches.......

and all of the Sawtooth Stars and my helper are ready to go.  I'm just tossing them on the table, floor and ironing board and 'pick and sew' - I don't stress over layout.  My biggest hurdle  will be moving Moe.

That project should go quickly as it is just a lot of long straight line stitching.  So I have this project dumped.  This is a quilt my Mom started in 1970 (?) and she tried to get someone to take the bag and finish it.  Well, no takers and I didn't want to toss it.  BUT I tested that pink and green fabric - it was not cotton and melted fast to my iron even at a rather low setting.  So blocks will get taken apart so the pink can be scrapped and the green went out the door.  It looked like she started setting these on point with the light floral alternating - that may change.

We are getting some nice cooler, fallish weather and I like to spend time outdoors in this setting.  My flower gardern needs a perk up and maybe I'll go up the road to see if anything Fall is ready for planting.

Monday Making

We are going into a much cooler, more Fall like weather pattern for a few days - plus lots of rain.  Good time to stitch those projects into their next phase.    All of these 16-patches with spacers are going into rows.

There are alternating setting rows so the plan is just to get all the rows done - maybe a few stitched together.  I kind of get bored at this point and boredom leads to errors.

I have some more gifted vegies to prep for the freezer and there will be dinner to throw in the crockpot.  Love the smell and warmth a stew simmering away gives to a cool, damp house.

A Late Scrappy Wednesday

I've been a little MIA which happens when I get into quilting mode.  Also, some secret sewing is happening that can't be revealed for another month.  Some time has been spent tending to preserving gifted vegies, caring for Mom, and some ME time.

I shared this with my guild at our Tuesday outdoor social meeting.  This is a very poor chart that someone share with Bonnie Hunter and as soon as I saw it on her blog several years ago, I knew I had to research it and reproduce it.  It's hard to read, but this is a museum piece in Ireland and actually has a bit of 'shirtail' heritage to family.

This took several years to make as I collected bits of fabric in specific colors - lots of little bins filled over time.  When there was enough for a row, it was stitch and more fabric collected - row by row it grew.  Now it is ready to be quilted.

Monday Making

I've pin basted this postage stamp quilt to prep for quilting today.  It took me a little longer to do because of help that wasn't too helpful - you might spy in the upper right hand corner.

Yup, right where there is absolutely NO pins - a good place to take a bath.
But company showed up and he had to be in the middle of everyone.  So I quickly pinned that spot and it is ready - and I enjoyed company.

I laid all these plaids - mix of homespuns, shirting, and cotton plaids.  When I need a break from the quilting, I'll tackle these to cut up for a new project.

I'm happy to say that the homespuns are now in a much smaller tote.  Another large tote to put away (not refill).  My daughter helped with the clean out.  She filled that last empty large tote - half of the homespuns of pinks, light blues, and greens.  A number of things off the shelf - I've got that 2 yr turn around thing.  The tote and large bag went home with her.

Now I need to reorganize and rechart what is left for a more workable year end progress.  I'd like to see half of it finished, used, or moved on.  I already know that next year is going to be more dedicated to hand work.

Whooping Friday

The herd of Triceratops is completed.   For some reason I made the same mistake on the same section with each dino.  I even put a NOTE in the instructions, but still flipped the wrong way.  Luckily I check before snipping off.  The seam ripper had a great time.  Sashings and borders are cut and ready for a weekend finish.

AND Bella was such a great help in getting this one quilted and bound.  I just kept spinning her as I needed to work a section.  She would just reposition onto the available space.  But it got finished and hopefully it will be a nice day for outside photos.

Scrappy Wednesday

All of the 16-patches are made, but I need twelve 3x4 blocks.  So the 1.5" squares have been dumped on the table again.  When I find 4 like pieces, they are set into groupings for the Easy Breazy leader/ender project.

  
I have quite a pile of the white scraps pieces bundled so I can pair up with the tiny squares.  I'm not really working these as leader/enders, but doing up 10-12 at a time.  Right now I have 50 blocks done and have another 10 ready to whip up at the machine .  This is a year long project, so I might set this aside for a couple of months.

Poor Moe got caught outside in the storm from yesterday afternoon until the blow over the next late afternoon.  Well, he must have held up in one of the barns and sure he 'fed' himself.  I gave him a special treat and lots of pets & scritches.  Then he hunkered down in the middle of my work.  It will make me slow down the process, but sometimes we need that nudge to take it slow.

So many areas were hit hard with storm Isaias and NY was in the eye for some time.  While areas around us had extensive damage and power outage, we stayed 'lit' and hopefully damage free - I won't know until I assess things later.

Monday Making

Today I am going to play with a new pattern.  This is another design by Lorna @ SewFreshQuilts called Triceratops.

These are large blocks (with some tiny pieces) and I need to make 6.  This will help clear some things out of my FG totes.

Hope every one along the East Coast stays safe as Hurricane Isaias rolls on up.  We were on tornado watch last night.

OMG - August 2020

The OMG has been so helpful in progressing a project or lately, getting that 'to-be-quilting' pile tackled.  I will use August OMG to get a top quilted so I can set aside for donation to the Wounded Warriors Winter Games.

This is held in Windham, NY at the local ski resort and many of the local quilds donate so each participant receives a quilt as a thank you.

The Games are still on schedule, but we shall see.  I'd still like to have this one ready.

AND I am so happy that by using OMG, I now have one empty large tote!  Of course there are two more that need emptying.
