Scrappy Wednesday

Those strattas have become 16-patches.  I have 10 done, but need 36 for this project.  So more strattas from that string tote have to be made, then sub-cut, and then turned into more of these  cuties.

Scraps went into the next temperature rosette.  We are slowly warming up and with next weekend being the clock changes again - maybe Spring is on it's way?

Because the temperature quilt is on it's way to coming to an end, I started a new Hexie project.  Larger papers and using a JR of Indigos and cheddars with some shirtings.  I have started participating in a 'fiber play' date at our local Library.  It started out as a knitting group, but has evolved into any type thread/fiber work.  Lovely bunch of ladies and I really enjoyed my time.  There was knitting, crochet, embroidery, rug making and some needlework all going on.  The group meets every other week, so this will be a good project to take along.

It's hard to see, but I pulled the next slip from the cup for March's challenge for the Scrap Attack.  Bow Ties are the block of the month and I am waiting to see what color Angela pulls for RSC18 to use these with.

I've wavered from my 'focus' for the year.  I need to get at least one quilt quilted, bound and done!  I'm also prepping for some big things coming up in April - get those ducks in a row!

Monday Making

I'll join BETH with a little bit of 'making' today.  I pulled my two totes of CW fabrics that I am trying to work down a lot more before adding some fresh to them.

I had forgotten about Temecula Quilt Co little 1880 Sampler QAL and need to catch up on the blocks - four of them are out now.  They are 4.5" unfinished size - quick little blocks.

That should give me time to also play with some strattas.  Rather than cut a lot of 1.5" strips, I pulled my string tote out and finding lots to play with.  These will be sub-cut into 1.5" pieces for making 16-patches.  I could have just as easily pulled my barrel of 1.5" squares for these, but my strings really need taming and I don't feel like making string blocks - yet.

Of Cats and Dogs

The second poodle was finished today.  I used up the last of my black grunge on this guy.  I'm using the same black for all of the eyes and noses - used up the last of that strip.  The funky poms and ear - coffee beans and that is gone.  All of them will have the same Kona White background as it is a piece I need to move out of here.

In fact, I spent most of two days just cutting to gleen that black tote.  It was working backwards from my usual system to sort bags of scraps (large to medium to small to smallest) as I wanted to use up the smallest scraps first before heading into small and medium.  Larger pieces will only get cut into should I need them to fulfill the bricks and mini charm sizes, but I found another bag of black scraps!!!  I think it is mostly strings, but I will pull what is useable for those project as I have all the pieces cut for the poodles.  Now, if I can find that lid......

Bella is being borrowed next door as my Mom is having a mouse problem.  So I only have Moe who has been a bad boy.  We had some lovely spring like days and this guy did some neighborhood carousing and got in a scrap with someone.  I tried to get his injuries - cut down his nose and his left ear is has two 'tooth' marks from a bite.  He knows he is in the dog house with Momma, so won't look you in the eye or flash his wounds.

We are in for a very rainy weekend which will wash away all that snow and maybe do some low-land  flooding.  I have some serious housecleaning and clearing out to do.  Oh, and some sewing time as well.

Scrappy Wednesday

I have a few ungoing projects that I will some piece work on as leader/enders.  There are just 8 more of the 'ribbon' blocks left that need their flip corners put on to snowball them.  Then those corner cut offs fall into another leader/ender project as hour glass blocks.

I have just 10 more dark and 10 more light Temecula Quilt Co. snowball blocks to add corners to.  I have just been attaching cornes - no clipping and turning as yet.  This is a long term project, so I am not rushing.

The newest temperature rosette is done.  Mother Nature and Father Winter are playing games with each other over the last few days; and looks to  continue in our next few weeks.  We swirl up and down at thier whimsy - and I have a green in this one!

My main goal is to do something with the over flowing black tote.  I don't even know where the lid is as I tucked it away because you just couldn't get it on a shoebox size that is trying to hold 3 x's it's amount.  This will be worked down into 3 projects.  Hey, while that pile of fabric is dumped use it to it's fullest.  It all has to be sorted, pressed, cut - might as well go into a plan (or plans).

 I've always wanted to make SALLY'S POODLE block and it being the Year of the Dog, it is a good time to make these.  My larger blacks and I even pulled my tote of gray for some of the darker prints are going to make some cute poodles.  

There's a lot of cutting, piecing, and keeping a real good track on what goes where.  BUT, aren't they just too stinkin' cute!!??

From those blacks (and some of the grays) I'm cutting 2.5" x 6.5" bricks for a coin quilt and 2" squares for some 9-patches.  Anything else will get broken down into my barrel and string system.

Monday Making

After making large blocks and large borders, I need to relax and play with something small.  Yes, I am in the insane group that loves and releases stress with working with very tiny bits of fabric.  I have some pieces left over from the jacket I made (which I don't think I ever posted here).  This is all getting chopped down to smaller and smallest.

I need to get my project finished for the next blog hop with Carol.  She's announced a new hop for May that might interest you - so take a visit.

Scrappy Purple

The problem child Anvil Block got finished, blocks corrected in the layout so they all faced the same way, and sashed.  I went right to work getting this one DONE.  I used up some 'stray' light grey JR strips for the inner sashing and the inner border was just enough of 'stray' white JR strips.  The little bit of those was chopped up into my barrel system.

The tropical print was something that come home with me when our guild had their 'stash swap' night.  It's not something I would buy or use, but it worked with this quilt for the outer border.   AND I hate borders and this is probably the widest border (9.5") I have ever put on a quilt.  BUT, it was to use that print up.  Cutting the length of the good size yardage of this made it so I didn't have to match/piece the  strips.  I had just a 2.5" strip left from the cutting and the small bit that was trimmed to length of border.  Those were cut down into my barrel system, too.

Now it is in the 'to-be-quilted' pile; which is growing.
This quilt full-fills the color purple for RSC18,  the Pantone Color of the Year quilt, and the block pulled for my Scrap Attack project.

Scrappy Wednesday - Late

Wednesday was a day of more 'un-sewing' than sewing.  I had to take a break.  I did get the next temperature rosette together - finally in the right order.  Those are a dusty blue, but look white - ah well.

This was my true nemesis for stitching!!  I made 20 blocks and do you know - it was the 20th block that I took apart three times and re-stitched wrong three times - again.  I walked away.  Then I went back to it and even though I had those blocks laid out, yes - I turned some the wrong way when I attached sashings.  I'm sure you folks have had one of those days or projects.  Just out to bite you!!  BUT, it is at the stage of the final border and as much as I detest borders - that puppy is getting on this so it is finished.

I did get this lovely in our Quilt Guild postcard swap at Tuesday night's meeting.  I have been yearning for my flowers and how nice I got this sweet postcard.  Plus, it was made by our longest term member which means a lot to me.

Monday Making

I want to start working on the next BOM Challenge block.  I have the bias vine ready for some hand stitching.  This shouldn't take long to do so I have another project to work on.

All of the units are ready for the last 6 purple Anvil blocks.    I might start adding the sashing, too.

I am hoping that it is not too icy today so I can get out for some grocery shopping.  Seriously - we had people who could not get up our lane yesterday because it was a sheet of ice.  I can make do, but I despirately need to get out of the house!

RSC18 - Purple

I finished another six Anvil Blocks so now have twelve done.  A big difference in the shades of purple and I hope it all plays nice in a quilt.

The plan is for a 4 x 5 setting with sashing/corner stones and everything is cut.  I hope to get at least four more made today.  I have some other commitments that have priority or I would finish this whole thing up this weekend.  Hey, there's still time in this short month so why rush.

We are in a 3 day spell of snow and ice - I won't step my foot off the porch!  The furkids and I are going into Cabin Fever Mode right now.

Whooping Friday

I am happy to say that the borders are on the challenge quilt.  I would have loved to have done more creatively with this, but I was working with a very limited amount of this line of Mary Engelbreit fabric.  I have a black with the cherry print for the binding (just enough), but need to find a backing - maybe a picnic red/white checker board?

This is the small amount of left over cut down into my fabric system.  They will warm another project with their charm.

Now I had to find another project to clean out.  These blocks are from almost a year ago.  Howard Marcus' Collection for a Cause 'Circa 1892'  layer cake with some Kona Snow.  I need to add the 'flip' corners and all of those bits are cut.

If I can get at least half of the blocks done with their corners today, that will make for a good sewing day.

Bonus blocks - I'm using those cut-offs from the corners to make some bitty hour-glass for another project.

We are dug out  and plowed out from our snow storm, so I need to get out for a bit to get some in-town errands done and pick up some staples.  Really - just to get out as Cabin Fever is setting in!

Scrappy Wednesday

The next week's hexie rosette for the temperature quilt.  We bounced a little bit in temps and the black with dots represents the eclipse (used the same for the other eclipse).  I have a 'temperature' chart that I use for a scale with the temps, but it's what I pull from my scrap barrel.  So if there is a 20 it is not always the same bit of scrap, but in that color range.

I need to get the last two rosettes stitched to their background and add to the row.  As you can see, we've had a very interesting array of temperatures so far this winter.

We are in the midst of the 'epic' snow storm and I think every school in NY State is closed.  A good day to get the borders on this challenge with what's left of those ME scraps.

It’s A T-Sweet Day!

When Carol called out for particpants in this Hop, I was in the middle of doing some reorganization and came across a container of green and pink 2.5" squares - when did I cut/collect these?  Perfect for my project.  These are just the left overs from the finish - I had a LOT of squares!

I started out making a lot of 4-patches and was going to just add something with an applique, but that's not me.

So I added some small hearts in the mix, but after I laid a few rows out they looked a little lost.  It needed something more.

So a few large hearts got added to the mix as the bigger picture  and the little hearts were the fun little finds.  There even are a few black/white blocks in the mix to add a little more whimsy.

Just a plain single outer border to hold it all together, a limey green for the back, lots of straight line quilting, and the binding is the last of an old Ro Gregg 'Supporting Cast'.  How perfect was that stripe green with mini pink flowers.  

I had an extra little heart and it will be the label.  Since this will be a donation quilt, I don't normally add a label but this adds a little bit of a loving touch.

The quilt finished 50" x 60" and will be one of my quilt guild donations to Family Community Services  - sure to wrap some little girl in a lot of love.

Bits & Pieces

This month's color for RSC is purple and I am using a variation of the Anvil block.  This block is known by many names, but I thought it gave a lot more movement to the different shades of purples as well as to tie them all together in the end result.  Even the lighter area are scraps pulled from my 'lite box'.

I've cut all the necessary  blocks and rather than throw the left overs back into their totes, I cut them down into my fabric chain system.  Various size squares that I use frequantly and strips/strings.  I only seperate the lights in the smaller squares other wise it all goes.

Since I found those Bonnie Hunter rails challenge blocks, I figured I better get them into a flimsy before they got lost again.  Therails and log cabins could be laid out so many different ways, but this had the least about of seams that I had to worry about matching up - and there are a lot of seams.

I wind so many bobbins when quilting to be sure I don't run short mid-project, and then I have left overs.  This is a good piece to use those up as it is so colorful that the color thread doesn't matter.

 Jo's challenge to finish up an old BOM kit/project is coming along.  The wreath block is done other than the buttons for the berries.  Those will get added after quilting.

February's block will be the grapevine.  All the pieces are prepped and this is a smaller block, so being a short month this block fits the time.

Today I am guest hosting over at SARAH'S for the Scrumptious Scraps and have a tutorial. She's having another scrap box give away, too.

Today is Slow Sunday Stitching, but I haven't got anything other than my daily hexie for the temperature quilt.  My 15 minutes a day has been sewing every day (for hours) with at least 15 minutes a day (not today) of hand work.

I love the hype of Philly Phil and the weather predictions.  Hey, it's 7 weeks until the true Spring Equinox!  I have noticed a number of small birds 'flocking' thru our feeders and enjoying the heated bird bath.  And  old man skunky has been out on the 'scented' prowl for a week now.
