OMG - March

I'm using the OMG challenge to move a project along to it's next phase.  This is probably my oldest sitting project that I have pulled.

I did these cross stitch pieces probably 10 years ago.  The site is no longer active so I can't give proper tribute to the designer, I believe is was a Danish site.

They got tucked away and forgotten.  Once found , I was into fabric framing my cross stitch.  These got pieced and never properly squared up because they got lost again.

I found them tucked inside a folded flimsy - in that deep bottomless tote!  I ordered some fabrics for sashing and didn't like any of them.  So they went on the shelf.  And many projects have since been completed with them forgotten - BUT not lost.

It is their time and I will find the proper sashing and I will get them into a flimsy (wallhanging).  They are bright and cheerful, thoughts of spring.

Whooping Friday

The Rainbow Unicorn - a Lorna McMahon @ Sew Fresh Quilts pattern - has been finished for my Grand daughter.  We had a sunny day on Monday and a couple of the sewing gals held the quilt outside for me.  Love how the sunlight plays across it.  It needs a good going over with the lint brush to catch thread, fuzzies, and cat hairs before I ship it out.

The tribe (or herd)  has been assembled and I hope to quilt this one next month.  The pattern is by John Renaud called 'Kidding Around - Goats in Pajamas'.  I bought this as a kit and there is plenty of fabric left over for another quilt (except background).  I am passing that on to a guild member (Monday stitcher here at the house) as she liked to make the pattern.

A good wrap up to the month of February.  We've seen little sunshine and too much cold/snow, so I hope March comes in like a lamb.  Maybe I have a lamb pattern to encourage that.

Scrappy Wednesday

It's back to rainy, cold (possibly snow), yucky days - time to play.  I had pieced that heap of stings a couple of weeks ago and I would like to do something with them so they off the corner of the table.  

Trimming them down and removing papers.  The yellow is left from the Unicorn quilt and I would like to use that up rather than store it.

I'll make as many blocks as the yellow allows and then we play with layout from there.

I didn't get too far with the RSC20 color for the month and there are only a few more days left.

OMG - February

I'm using the OMG @ Elm Street Quilts  to progress a project into it's next stage.  It might be a small step or a large step, but this month's was more of a challenge because it involved borders - and I hate borders.

The Threadology Quilt Along with Moda in 2019 has had it's borders added to create a giant spool.  It will now go into the 'to-be-quilted' pile - not for long as I plan to enter it in a Fall show.  I have the backing and binding fabrics, so once it gets to the top of the pile (or pulled) it will get finished off.

Allowed to Follow a Voice

This was the project I chose for my Facebook Group - Finish One Project.  And I am happy to say that a 2015 flimsy ('Hillside Houses' by Pretty Little Quilts)  that sat hidden in a tote is now finished.  The solid grey for the back and binding with organic straight line quilting with grey thread top/bottom.  This has been entered in the April quilt show.  I don't expect to win anything, but this one deserves a little special attention after being hidden for so long.

Since I have all my projects completed for the month, I'm allowed to follow those crazy voices in my head and play.  So I started on the 'Kids in Pajamas' quilt.  I think these are just so stinkin' cute!  This pattern is definitely for those use to working with tiny pieces as many .75" and 1" size squares and skinnies.  I've noted since the first one how to change some of the cutting and piecing to eliminate some of those tinies for less seam/bulk.  I'll be changing up the final layout as well to suit my own little 'herd' - also known as a tribe or a trip.  I would love to own some pygmy goats for my own 'tribe' - gotta have a tribe. 

We might get lucky and see some sunshine this weekend - gotta love that too.

Color It Red

When CAROL posted this new Hop, I had to take the challenge.  I work small bits of red into quilts for a little fun pop, but  never to make a RED quilt all together.  BUT it didn't have to be a full red project, just so it reads some red - sooth my soul.

I am a scrap quilter by heart and I had a bag of them as part of the gifted items from a fellow Hall of Fame quilter's Estate.  I new there would be a lot of reds as Lesley liked reds and Civil War fabrics.  I knew right away what block to make to represent her as well.

The heritage block - Churn Dash - rolled out of this wonderful pile of scraps.  I petted each one with fond memory of this lovely lady.

To use all the fabrics in that bag, I chose to use a 'broken' border around each block and it would make a woven look sashing.

The outer border and backing are the only fabrics from my stash.  A quilt was just waiting to be made from that baggy and I hope it truly represents the quilter that they came from.

And I found some more red to clear from the shelf.  Chicken Wire and Homespun to play with some 16-patches.  I like to use the flip corner method to make geese units so I have the cut-offs to use.

More homespun for sashing and some crazy birds fabric I bought long ago.  It was one of those 'have to get this' and then I didn't know what to do with it.  Now those birds are 'caged' and add some fun to this bright quilt.

A guild member had brought a lot of homespuns to our swap meeting and they never made the table because I scooped them right up out of her arms.  This large red piece made for the perfect back - and there is enough for another quilt backing.

Those cut-offs are going to play as well.  I remembered I had bought a number of embroidery samples from a LQS that had closed.  These horses where on a piece that had many horse embroideries, but I wanted only these so took the sampler apart.

A messenger bag using up what little bit was left of that homespun and the strap is what was left of what I used for the binding.

The hourglass blocks on the back to add to the farm fresh look.

I think I have gotten my fill of RED.

Lost in a Box

What was to be only a day of play, well - stretched to three days.  I got thru the browns, greens and half the reds.  BUT they were to go into 'in-progress' projects.  This made for a lot of cutting, piecing, and sorting.  SO I GOT LOST!!!  It happens when I play in scraps.

I found there were a lot of strings in that box as well as the bags I was pulling from.  My string tote - some where under that mess - was overflowing.  So in my weak moment, string blocks got made.

They need trimming down, but there are 50 blocks in this pile and I went thru almost half of that old phone book for papers.

I really don't like making string blocks, but the plus side is I can use up all my partial bobbins.  It doesn't matter what color you use because the stitching is small and there are so many color fabrics in the blocks.

Creating a mess on this table as well.  I thought I would tackle a few more Shoo Fly blocks and then went DUH!!  As there are more than enough to make a quilt with an on-point setting.

This made for pulling my totes of Civil War prints and some mini prints from the barrels - adding to the chaos.

Neutrals and solids were pulled from the box and got put on the small side table so they can be stored away correctly.  I don't like to store or keep fabrics in baggies - each color and/or special cut has it's own tote for storage.

A dozen 'double-double' 4-patches or Road blocks got made.  I need a lot more of these and I am sure working thru that box more is going to help.  Once I've gleened, I'll hit my FQ totes that are in despirate need of trimming down. 

And some two-rail units made for the Log Step quilt.  I made some black/red rails units as well - didn't get their photo as I decided I JUST HAD TO start picking up.  I need to get back to the Unicorn quilt.

We were minus 12 degrees this morning and I really hope things start to warm up.   All you can do is .............

Scrappy Wednesday

I have gotten to the point of adding borders to the Rainbow Unicorn - I hate borders.  They are cut and ready to go on, but I am in need of a day of just play time.

This paper box stuffed full of gifted (thanks Pat C) scraps has not had the opportunity to be played with because I've been trying to be so good in getting things crossed off 'the list'.  I need to play!  I've saved a few patterns 'Seed Packet' by Kathy Doman for It's A Stitch Quilt Guild (google search just like this and a list of pdf patterns will come up) - I have the Cabin Steps in mind for this box.

And a reminder that you will be seeing RED in the near future.

Monday Making

I'm going start working on the Rainbow Unicorn by  Lorna @ Sew Fesh Quilts that has long been awaited for by grand daughter.  The largest size is 48" square, so I will be doing some 'addition' to make this a twin size quilt.

These are my fabrics, but I may be swapping some items.  I didn't like the background fabric I had purchased for this and have to pull something else.  I want my 'rainbow' so show up well on the new background.

I think I will use the Temecula Quilt Co 'Little Letters' to add her name to the quilt.  I'll use left overs along with the extra yardage of the purple from the Harry Potter quilt to make a backing for this.

Voices

As I am wrapping up most of my 'need to really do' items on my list, those voices are calling.  Come play with me, come play with me - NO me.

This came a couple of days ago.  This is the same designer as the sewing machine I just finished  - Kelli Fannin Quilt Designs.  This is too NEW and I have lots of other voices calling.  BUT one shoe would be OK, right?

Then this cutie!  'Kidding Around' - Goats in Pajamas by John Renaud.  I bought the kit from Nancy's Notions at half price several months ago.   This one really has me listening.

The Unicorn Quilt - Lorna @ Sew Fesh Quilts - that's promised to my granddaughter.  I have a lot of Lorna's patterns - hence the year of animals - that I need to tackle.

I think the priority is the Unicorn, and then a shoe and then a goat and....

Like so many from coast to coast - the storm has hit the Nor'East.  Many are without power as winds and lots of snow have gone thru and still more today.  BUT this is how we handle these storms in Upstate NY......

Scrappy Wednesday

Hillside Houses is quilted and bound.  Now I have many inches of hand stitching to do to have this completed.

February's color for RSC20 is ORANGE and I am using this to empty my 1.5" barrel - or least to tame it.  I don't have a lot of orange, but I want to keep this a small project being this is a short month.

Project #1 for Color It Red Blog Hop went under the machine for quilting.  This is my favorite kind of scrappy quilt, but you have to wait to see it.

Project #2 for Color It Red Blog Hop is now under the machine for quilting.  A whole different look to some RED fun.

The Hop runs from February 17 - 21 and I am scheduled for day one.  I will be ready.

After some mild days we are slipping back to BRRRRR and might see some snow again.  I have a few bindings to keep me busy.
