I would like to thank CAROL for organizing and hosting this wonderful Hop each year at this time. This year was a little change to the game by not just offering a cookie recipe, but also a tradition and/or a holiday quilt.
I will admit that I am not a baker. I was able to handle the job good enough when my kids were young and we made the most basic cookies. I think good cookies are a real art and those that make those OMG treats are true artists. So what's a non-baker doing in a cookie exchange?
Well, there are a lot of no bake recipes out there that help us non-bakers share during the holiday seasons. This is one of my favorites as it has all my fav bits of season tastes rolled into one cookie. You can substitute your favorite nut if you don't like pecans.
The tradition that has been passed down thru our family is putting an orange into the toe of each stocking. My daughter is following still with this tradition with her own children. There are many stories to the 'why' of this tradition, but it had always meant filling the New Year with riches. Oranges were hard to come by at the time of year or even during the war(s) and depression. An orange was a treasure as well as nuts and a little bit of chocolate (same reasons). Also, an orange could be shared. With it's many sections, it could be divided up for many to enjoy - encouraging share with what you have.
I am not one who likes to work with traditional holiday fabrics. I've been wanting to play with Kaffe Fassett for some time and this Hop came to the perfect match. The pattern is The No Bake Jolly Bar Quilt - how cool is that. Jolly Bars are 5" x 10" strips that come in bundles of 42. My Kaffe was 6" x WOF, but it worked and you can certainly cut your own stash.
I had fun quilting this with a lot of straight lines in different color threads matching colors in the prints - and a lot of white thread, too.
As a thank you for visiting and my 'share of the season', I have a give away of a layer cake (no thread) of the collection of 'Winter Flurries' by Connecting Threads. This would make a fun No Bake Quilt or any pattern you wish. Please be sure I have a way to contact you - winner to be drawn on Dec 1st.
Please be sure to visit the other Hosts today:
Sewingly Yours,
Sharon
Those cookies sound delish. And that kf jolly bar quilt is so fun with those colors and fun quilting. Another cool quilt you have baked up.
ReplyDeleteI love all no bake cookies. We used to have something very similar to this when I was youbg. My mom always put a marischino cherry in the middle. Thanks for the great memory.
ReplyDeleteI forgot about cream-cheese based no-bakes -- a delicious blast from the past for my taste buds! I love the quilt and the non-traditional color choices. Great job.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the orange in the stocking. I’m going to do that this year. Love the quilt - it looks like a great pattern to use up some scraps! The layer cake is beautiful- I love the blue, aqua and teal colours all together like that. Have a wonderful holiday! KaliaContiki@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteMy mothers family from Connecticut also had the tradition of an orange in the stocking. She was born in 1906 so it is a very old tradition.
ReplyDeleteYour snowball cookies sound delicious. I love your quilt!
ReplyDeleteNo bake cookies -- now that's a great idea! The ingredients sound yummy. I love that quilt and the quilting. I really need to up my Kaffe fabric stash (I only have one or two FQs, so maybe not a stash - ha). Those bright blues and aqua fabrics are so fresh and pretty!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you shared with us that you are not inclined to bake, now that my work schedule does not permit time in the kitchen (lots of store bought in my home now)...it is nice to see others revealing that being in the kitchen is not a shameful thing ;)
ReplyDeleteYou are a life saver! I have Grandma Love today and a quilt day tomorrow. So the no bake pineapple balls will be perfect. Thank you! We also always had an orange in the toe of our stockings. It was such a special treat. The Jolly bar quilt looks great as does your Winter Flurries fabric layer cake. Janice.snell@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteThose snowball cookies look wonderful--just looking at them makes my mouth water. The jolly bar quilt is awesome--I need to make one of those. We always had an orange and some nuts in our stockings too. I kept that up as long as our girls were still at home, but I don't think they do that for their children. Times and traditions do change... Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThe snowball cookies sound like a Pina Colada. We're going on a cruise in December so this gets me ready, YUM! Love the quilt stitching. I consider myself a "piece" person not a quilter, but I think I could do this. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWe always had an orange in our stockings too. I hadn't seen the Jolly Bar quilt before. It looks like a quick, fun sew. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI just printed this recipe and can't wait to try them. Thank you. All of my "likes" in one cookie. Your quilt is fun too. Those fabrics are wonderful eye candy. Your straight line quilting is awesome with the different colors. Merry Christmas, Sharon!
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt! And I wrote down the recipe. We got fruit in our stockings growing up, too. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteOranges have always been a big part of Christmas holidays, even dipped in chocolate! Your quilt is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteLove coconut so this cookie idea sounds yummy. The Kaffe Fassett fabric makes a great quilt and shows nicely in this color scheme.

I've not done as much baking as I did years ago, so those no bake snowballs would be a perfect way for me to have a yummy treat. An orange was always included in my Christmas stocking as a child, but I never knew why...thanks for the info. I love your no bake quilt and the stitching is a beautiful finish for it! Thanks for sharing and hopping with us, Sharon! xo
ReplyDeleteI think it's wonderful that your daughter is keeping the "orange in the toe" tradition alive. My father always spoke of how delighted he was to find an orange in his stocking when he was a boy (especially since he didn't get much else). I love theno bake quilt. Thanks for the link, I headed right over to download the pattern.
ReplyDeleteHi Sharon! I have a few snowball recipes but not one with pineapple, coconut and pecans. YUMMY. What a fun combination. It sounds a bit tropical, and totally delicious. I'll definitely give this a try - no-bake is a nice addition to all the other sweets. Plus, this must be gluten-free as well. I'm trying to be more focused and concerned about that for some family members. The No Bake Jolly Bar quilt turned out lovely! I love the different colored threads you quilted it with. Just perfect to continue the fun but not distract from all the quilty goodness. I remember hearing about the orange in the toe of my older sibling's stockings when they were young. I came along 22 years later, so my mom had moved on from that treat. Happy Happy Wednesday to you. ~smile~ Roseanne
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt with the Kaffe fabrics and the way you quilted it using the different colored thread. Thanks for sharing and for the prize opportunity. Merry Quiltmas! MelvaLovesScraps at NolanQualityCustoms dot com
ReplyDeleteLove your recipe. I don't do alot of non bakes but I just might give it a try. Also love that quilt. Thank you so much for the inspiration !! email is chocolate_isthe_best_medicine@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteYour recipe looks delicious, thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a coconut fan so I'll skip your no-bake cookie. Those Connecting Threads fabrics look delicious. Lots of dots which would work with anything. I don't tend to buy pre-cuts because there's only a few pieces that I like, but this one has a good mix. Stay warm. Hope the car has been fixed.

Thanks for the lead on the No Bake quilt pattern. I can see using this with our outreach group. And the cookies look delicious - thanks.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful story. I love coconut and pineapple, not so much on the nuts unless its almonds. Your quilt is very pretty. Denise @fortheloveofgeese
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your recipe! My Husband will love them!! :) Will make some with the Grangirlie this weekend :) Love the quilt..& thank you for chance to win your Give-a-way too :D

ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your recipe. No bake is always a winner!
ReplyDeleteYummy....looks easy enought, will have to do these...thanks!
ReplyDeleteSharon, that's the perfect kind of cookie for me! I'm not a fan of coconut, but I'm thinking roll these around in a shallow pan of dark chocolate chips that are melted, and it could be the best truffle of the season! Or in those little sugar dots or jimmies, or a crushed sugar bomb cereal! This is a great and simple recipe. Thank you! Thanks also for the chance to win the lovely fabric. There is nothing like blue to make me happy, and I think I'd love to make that same quilt you did. That's a great looking design.
ReplyDeleteOh yummmm those look good!!
ReplyDeleteI am a non baker too. I really stretched over the last 2 years for this hop. Totally empty this year but your recipe looks fabulous. I will definitely be whipping them up in the very near future. Also love the quilt and the history on the orange. Love that kind of info.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for an easy and yummy recipe. I love the Kaffe quilt. His fabrics just sing!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful quilt (and thanks for the opportunity to win that pretty layer cake!!)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the delicious looking recipe. I think I'm gaining weight just looking at all the yummy cookies in this exchange.
ReplyDeleteYour recipe looks yummy. Cute quilt. Love your quilting.
ReplyDeleteOranges and Kaifeng Fasset fabrics; two of my favourite things in life! I read your post before we went to town so I was able to get supplies for the recipe. Beautiful fabric in your giveaway. Thank you for the chance to win and another yummy treat recipe.

Thank you for the recipe. Those Kaffe fabrics make a great quilt
ReplyDeleteLOL!! I'm running behind on reading my posts, and I see we both have the same taste in no bake cookies. These Cheesecake balls are to die for! Have a very Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteYour no-bake cookies sound awesome!! All the ingredients I love, but unfortunately most of my family does not love pineapple or coconut! But I'm going to try them anyway. Maybe my son-in-love and possibly one of the twins will eat them. They eat most anything!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the eye candy of the quilt and the cookies.
ReplyDeleteOur new church is collecting cookies for our shut-ins and since I don't have a lot of time to bake I have been looking for easy recipes.
Do you know, can the cookies be frozen?
The collection isn't for another week but I will have time to work on them this weekend.
Thank you again, you always put such great ideas on your blog.

I think I have gained weight just looking at the cookies! Thanks for sharing you recipe. It looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteWasn't able to visit yesterday but am now catching up. I love the tradition of an orange in the stocking. We always got an orange and an apple. Mom always said as she grew up they only got an orange at Christmas - they were too expensive and very, very hard to come by. Love this recipe and I'm going to try it for our get-together in 10 days time. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteSharon, your quilt is fabulous! Your quilting adds such pizazz to an already stunning quilt. Well done! Please don’t put me in your draw...I have to live to be 200 years old to use up all the fabrics in my stash...what was I thinking!
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt. It is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteI always bake lots of cookies and freeze them. Then always have something to take for holiday get togethers. Thanks for chance to win layer cake. Lois
ReplyDeleteThose blues are gorgeous!!! And I love a good snowball cookies - I prefer peppermint <3
