I got a small FQ bundle of Midwinter Red and because of the vending season, just didn't get to it until now. I wanted to use this for the Temecula Quilt Co. 'Count Down to Christmas' mystery quilt. Well the mystery was revealed by the time I started.
I changed the size of my blocks (from 2" finished to 3" finished) and I have all the sub-units together so I can start assembling the quilt at leasure during December. I think I will border this so I have a nice size quilt.
Jo's Country Junction put out a challenge to finish up one of your Bonnie Hunter UFOs before the new mystery came out. This is the Bricks and Stepping Stones in her free pattern list. I had cut the bricks all thru the year with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge and the stepping stones are trims from two quilts finished during the year - use it up. Now that I see it out on the bed, I think it needs a border for a little more size - which means it will have to be sent off to a longarmer as it will be more than I can wrangle thru my home machine.
And with that new mystery Quiltville - Celtic Solstice, I got all my pieces cut for the first clue. I used the Tri-Rec ruler and it really wasn't that difficult a process. I may have taken longer because I really browsed my scrap bins and tubs to use even the smallest bits up. That's a good feeling - and I even got all my scraps down into one tub now - whoo hoo!!
My plan for today is to get these pieced. My poor old workhorse machine is limping so I will call to see when my LQS has the repairman scheduled for pick-ups and book her a time at the SPA. So I will be using my SIL's machine. It's Cyber-Monday, maybe I can find a good deal on a new machine and retire that sweet old gal to just piecing.
The last block for the Quilt Doodle Designs BOM 2013. I had just enough of my white background (odds and ends left) and luckily I made sure I had 2 layer cakes of the same print saved (light green) - the rest is scraps I saved from other blocks. I have just scraps and 2 layer cakes left from the Birds & Berries. All my sashings are made, so this is another project to finish this month as Cindy plans a quilt parade January. I do love this fabric line, and it made for some great blocks - excited to see this one together.
I will be linking up with:

ReplyDeleteI'm so impressed that you have kept up with Quilt Doodle Bom. I never seem to be able to do so. Really like the block with green, orange and white. Maybe a good quilting goal in 2014 for me?
ReplyDeleteGreat sewing, Sharon. Those stars are really going to be wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWhole bunch of great projects you've got going. Scrappy is best in my book! I added a border to the Bricks and Stepping a Stones quilt I made too :)
ReplyDeleteWhoa!!! You are really cranking things out, I'm just tired just reading about all you are working on and finishing. Not in the market for a pair of control top panty hose are you, you can use them to roll on along.
ReplyDeleteWow - you must have elves in your sewing space! I have bricks stashed away for that quilt, it's such a striking pattern. And I LOVE your Midwinter Reds project.
ReplyDeleteThat's a LOT of Linking up today. Glad you got your Bonnie Quilt almost done for the Challenge. Glad you dug through your scraps! I need to reduce some of mine. I like the Tri-recs ruler for cutting these star points for the Celtic Solstice. Now it's time to do a bit of decorating.
ReplyDeleteThe amount of quilting you accomplish I can believe your sewing machine conked out. The red and white quilt looks like it will be lovely, and I love the green star. Looks great.
ReplyDeleteGreat work Sharon. It must feel great to nearly get your Bonnie quilt top finished.

ReplyDeleteBricks and Stepping Stones looks great. Good start of the new Mystery Quilt.
Busy YOU!
I was wondering if you were making Count down to Christmas. very pretty fabrics. I have always wanted to make bricks and stepping stones. Thanks for the idea for 2014 Rainbow Challenge. Yours is very pretty. Keep up using your stash.
ReplyDeleteSo many great projects! It is always fun seeing other versions of the same projects. Kathy posted the Temecula quilt today as well, both so pretty but totally different. I am waiting to. Get my machine back from the repair shop any day -- waiting is so hard!
ReplyDeleteWow Sharon! Love your Bricks & Stepping Stones - and yes it does appear as though it could use a border. I've been wanting to make one of those myself :*) I haven't started Bonnie's mystery - may have to wait until after the first of the year. Too much else going on! Applause for you using up those bits and pieces of scraps! Mine have taken a good hit from the RSC too :*) Next year I am going to include a crumb block as well, because my crumb jars are overflowing.
ReplyDeleteOh boy those are some little red star blocks and you made them bigger than the original? yikes!! It's gonna be super. But that scrappy bricks and stepping stones is amazing! Love it, always so much inspiring quilty goodness when I stop by here :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see that you've got some fun time in lately. I'm hoping for some of that today myself. Any luck finding a new-to-you machine?
