Mourning Trees

It may seem silly to mourn a tree, but this poor old gal was our oldest and last pear tree.  She weathered 3 tornados (yes, NY gets tornados), several floods, Irene - BUT two days of heavy rains, winds, and extreme lightening finally toppled this old gal.

Another tree with lightening strike.

A Cherry tree lossed - and two new ones crushed by her fall.  We had a few trees fall along the old logging lane, but some of those are leaning and I didn't feel safe to venture that direction on a breazy day for photos.

And I totally forgot to take photos of the long lane - my poor brother has had to re-grade our drive three times from the heavy rain run-off damage.

Being a former timber farm, fruit farm, x-mas tree farm - we love our trees and mourn their untimely loss - now for a long clean up process, but we are in for more storms the next few days - hopefully we don't lose more trees.

And my poor fur babies - relaxing after some scarey moments.  Bella spent most of her time either clinging to my neck or on top of the frig and Moe hung out in the bathtub.

I hope everyone who was in the wake of these storm cells are safe,
Sewingly Yours,
Sharon

  1. Good to hear you and your kitties are safe. Sorry about the trees.

I still miss the beauty of the old sugar maple that shattered in half during the ice s few winters back. Half of it ended on our roof but it did not break through. We had the other half taken down. It saved out house, though. A towering white pine broke halfway up from the weight of the ice and was heading toward the house and that would have gone through the roof, had it not hit the maple first. We tapped that maple and boiled down the sap for syrup. A smaller white pine is shooting up into the light now and whispers in the wind.

I still remember the old apple tree that we climbed as kids, too. It was a big Cortland and it lived to old age and came down after days of heavy rains. Every fall I buy only Cortlands for my pies in honor of that tree.
I have loved and been sheltered by many trees.
It is sad to say goodbye to leafy friend.
The tornado that hit north of Boston was less than ten miles from where my hubby was working, but we are all safe and so are our trees, although we lost a few small limbs.
Your kitties look like they are staying close to the house ... just in case they have to run inside ... good kitties ... <3 Pat

  2. I do not think it is silly at all! They were part of your home. I am very grateful that you are all OK, and I hope others stay safe as well. You kitties look tired from the whole ordeal. Hope it is over.

  3. I know what you mean. We felt the same when we lost the last of our apple trees. I hope your weather improves. No more horrible storms.

  4. If I were a bird, I couldn't be more attached to my trees.I even feel sorry when I have to prune them. Seeing how Nikko reacts to a storm, I can see why those cats have some catching up to do.

  6. It is always sad to see trees go like that, but, looking on the bright side, at least you, your furries and your house are all unharmed.

    Keep safe.

  7. That looks like a wild and scary ride thru those storms.....I would be hiding in the bathroom with Moe too! Mourning the loss of those trees makes sense to me....their deep roots were rooted in your family history. Hope your weather improves, as you have had a rough year.

  8. I know how sad it is to loose a tree , they become a part of our lives and bring us joy . We have several large maples in our yard and I was very concerned in that last storm Arthur but we made it through with just a few small branches .

  9. So sorry to read about the loss of so many precious trees, but happy you and your kitties are safe. The weather could hardly be more weird this year. I don't remember New York weather being this wild during my childhood there, but seems it has become increasingly so during the past 10-15 years. Take care and stay safe.

  10. I'm so sorry for your loss. I feel sad whenever I see trees broken or downed. We were fortunate to be right between cells as the storm passed by but I did see some damage, including 1 massive tree, on my way to and from work. Glad you and the kitties made it through, realitively speaking, unscathed.

  11. Sorry about your trees. I do understand about losing trees. I lost two from my front yard and my house will never look the same. Glad you and yours are safe. The weather seems to be extreme from coast to coast these days and we just have to make the best of it.

  12. Being from a heavily wooded home, I share your grief. I absolutely hate to see a tree die, no matter the cause.

The weather this year has been wacky!

  13. It's always hard to see a tree go down. We do get attached to them. I'm glad that you are safe. You've experienced lots of extremes this past year.

  14. Oh, I'm so sorry, Sharon. I would be mourning too. Trees are like old friends.

  15. Oh, bless your heart! I mourned 3 big trees (giant trees) that my new neighbor had removed. What an idiot. The were right next to my yard so I felt like they were my trees. I understand. Stay safe. I live in Oklahoma so often get bad weather, including tornadoes. Glad you made it through! XO

  16. My city lucked out, but there was a tornado near Boston, so it must have traveled a very narrow path here. I would mourn the trees, too. It's sad to see beauty destroyed, even by Mother Nature. I love the picture of your cats looking so peaceful. A hurricane pulled up a magnolia tree in our yard about 20 years ago, and my mother could not bear to remove it. So my brother used his truck to pull it upright and then secured it in place with heavy ties. It looked scrawny for a few years, but never died and is now it's old self.

  17. Glad to hear that all are well.

I did not realize that you were in NY. . . .somehow I had gotten the impression that you were in the South.

I love my trees and can completely understand what you are talking about. We have an evergreen tree that needs to be taken down before it falls down & takes out the corner of our yard, but there is a family of birds in it so I don't want to take it down now. . . but perhaps in the fall I will have no choice as it keeps leaning further & further into the road.

I hope that any additional storms are small for you.

  18. We just keep getting crazy weather all over the country. So sorry to see trees suffer.

  19. I mourn every tree and plant that we lose when storms come through, they're part of our family and life. I'm so sorry to hear about yours, especially after surviving so many other disasters.
Poor Moe and Bella and lets not forget about you, lightening strikes that close had to be pretty scary.

  20. glad that you and your furbabies are safe after the storm...it is really sad when a tree goes down for whatever reason...hopefully you will not lose anymore to inclement weather.

  21. Sorry about all your trees. Glad you are safe, and the trees didn't hit the house.

  22. Those definitely were some wicked storms we had. Luckily we didn't have any trees come down here but there was local flooding. Can we keep our fingers crossed that we are through the worst of it? I sure hope so.

  23. So glad everyone is okay! I understand how your feel about your trees! We can have some strong winds here and have lost some beautiful, tall spruce trees around our home. Will you replant the cherry trees?

  24. So sorry to hear of the tree damage...it sure has been a challenging year of weather!

  25. It is never a bad thing to mourn a tree - and this one was a lovely old beauty for sure...Our weather here has been unbelievably windy all summer, too - and currently, I have the top half of a neighbor's 40-foot birch tree dangling by a bit of pulp and bark over my backyard...a worry, because my two dogs have to go out there a few times a day to "you know what"...Maybe planting a new pear tree will make you feel better - it won't be the same - but you can watch it grow and develop...

  26. It's sad to see your toppled trees. Hopefully the strong storms are gone and things can get back to normal.
