Quilting Buddies

Quilters who have cats will relate to this.  Mine get attached to certain quilts and you just can't get them to stay away or off.  Bella really tested me while I was trying to finish off the last 'to-be-quilted' pieces on my monthly list.  Apparently homespuns are a fancy - or maybe it's the reds.

And my daughter's family just got a new kitty.  He has taken his job as quilt cat quite seriously already.  She had the same problem as kitty claimed this quilt thru all it's processes.

Christmas in July Blg Hop

I would like to thank CAROL for hosting yet again another fun and inspirational Blogger's Hop for us to enjoy.  This one was greatly looked forward to  - it has been so ghastly hot and humid that to think a little Christmas can certainly help.

THEN

My early blogging years introduced me to so many quilters world wide as I joined several swap groups.  I miss these folks, but postage got so terribly espensive that it ended them.  One of my favorites was the Secret Santa Sack Swap, they really made my Christmas special. 

The Miniatures Group did theme and seasonal Swaps.  I adore miniatures and have some wonderful pieces from around the world. 

NOW

I don't do a lot of mysteries, but this one came along just when I signed up for this Hop.  Hosted by MODA - Fat Quarter Shop with a weekly block reveal.  All the blocks are there and the last block with setting doesn't come out until this Thursday, but I wanted mine done for the Hop.

The last block is the center and I went with just a simple 9-patch.  Not sure if they are setting a border, but I wanted just a little more and it made it come out to a 50" square throw size.  Will be fun tossed across the couch.

I don't like to work with 'heavy sesonal' prints, so chose this bright polka dot, accented with the starry print, and the background is a white-on-white mistletoe print.  The star print will be used for the binding (made).  These are all pieces that have been 'gifted' to me over the years, and I'm glad they have found their place in a quilt.

Since I am a scrap quilter, yardage is a premium.  I knew these three pieces were going to be 'squeekers' compaired to the yardage chart.  And yes, they were!!  This is all that is left.

GIVE AWAY

A layer cake of a 'gilded' mix of Holiday prints.  There are two of each print and at least 42, but there might be more (I can't count).  Every time I counted I got a different number, so I threw a few more on the stack.  I will pull the winner next Tuesday, August 4th - be sure I can contact you.

OMG - July 2020 Link Up

Link Up

My goal for July was to finally quilt the Moda 'Patchwork Sampler' - a Quilt Along in 2017.  This was done in a Patrick Lose fabric line - Katherine Anne and Kona Snow background.

Backed with this Windham gray floral - a lot of grays in the prints.  I must like this as I had 3 pieces in the extra wide tote.

And I was worried I had made enough binding as I have none of this line left and would have trouble finding more.  Well, I didn't need to worry.

Into The Weekend

I so appreciate the shared produce and things have been processed and/or eaten.  There is nothing like a cool,crisp salad on a hot day made from all fresh things from the garden.  I don't can any more, but I have found a lot of recipes on-line to prep foods for freezing.  Some of this will be enjoyed during the winter days.

I'm still in quilting mode as well as did up some quick, small commission pieces.  My furkids have learned to stay out of the mix.  Actually they are usually melted puddles on the porch, but my Bella has taken to laying in the doorway during the worse heat of the day.  Yes, I prop the outside door to accomodate her - she has me well trained.

They say there is a coin shortage (I must have it all), but did you know that the 2020 quarter has a bat on the back?  Now you are all gonna' look!  A guild member is a bat specialist and has us all checking our change as she has included a 'bat' coin in her July mail orders.  Brilliant idea!!

Scrappy Wednesday

Well I had the goal of getting at least another 20 blocks done, but I make a mess when I scrap quilt.  Things cover at least two tables and the ironing board.  I would have just 14 more to make the required amount needed for this project, so I just sewed!!!  That project now has it's own tote. I need to clear the mess as I have a binding to do for a client and  try to get another top quilted before the end of the month.

I do have two quilts to share that my daughter just finished.

 Yes, they have a new kitty who has learned to photo bomb.

And I have some cucumber salsa and some zucchini relish to make - and that means I'll have a kitchen to clean up, too.

So whether you are scrapping away or enjoying the garden produce, stay Safe and Healthy.

Monday Making & Give Away

I've been doing more reorganizing which involved some scrap processing.  One jar full now cut down into either the scrap barrels or for specific leader/ender projects.  The pretty old glass jar now holds selvedges.  I have always saved those and shipped off to others, but I have a small project I would like to do at some time.

The very messy string tote was gleened for those leader/ender projects.

Very happy that this is now neat and tamed - I hate making string blocks so glad most has gone into feeding other projects.

And I thought I had used all my triangles up.  Some are squared up , most are sewn, some bagged as left overs from specific projects.  Everything from 1.5"  to 4.5" unfinished.  I am giving these away!  You have to take them all.  So if you are interested, just note in a comment.  Only shipping in the US - closing comments on Thurs, July 23 (8pm est) and pull winner that evening.

Since I am trying to tame the 1.5" barrel (I added more with my reorg), I will work on more 16-patches.  I need 84 and have 50 done.  Hopefully pedal to the metal will produce 20 more today.

I Scream-You Scream

Today they are predicting to be the hottest day of the year - the heat index dangerous.  We have been seasonally cooler than so many areas, but we are HOT today.  

AND how fitting that it is National Ice Cream Day.  Many places offer free or discounted ice cream - just treat yourself!

Scrappy Wednesday

Today I will work on the leader/ender blocks as my display board is stacked high and I keep knocking the piles over.  Yes, I went thru that stuffed baggy of scraps.  Some where used for parts for this project.

The rest of the bag was cut down into my scrap saver system.  I actually put the sqaures away a couple times before this last bunch - I was knocking them on the floor.  All the squares have gone into my barrels, but the strings will wait as I plan to cull thru that tote next for more scraps to feed the leader/ender project.

Monday Making

After a long quilt session with the Black Bear Walking, I need some time to play before tackling the next quilt.

I'm digging and pulling the last of my Patrick Loose to use in the 'Ostrich Stretch' pattern by LORNA @ SewFreshQuilts.

The bodies will all be the black which is the Ginko Leave backing trim from the Bear and the ruf  The wings are a muted/mottle Patrick floral that I used long ago for a border (has a little bit of gold fleck thru it).  They are making a fun 'feather' look for these cute birds.  The beak and eyes are another PL fabric that I had just enough of.

It's to be another stormy day with our temps dropping several degrees for a few days - yeah!  Good day to stitch away with a little bit of humor.

Whooping Friday

I'm whooping it up as the Black Bear quilt is finished.  This is Lorna @ SewFreshQuilts 'Bear Paw' pattern and the second quilt I have done with it.  I didn't use the border of small paw prints as it was requested to use RealTree fabrics (manufacturer of hunting appearal fabrics) in the outer borders.

All the bear paw blocks were done in scrappy fall color greens.  The grey sashing representing Birch Trees.  Finished 62" x 68" and glad to have this one crossed off the list.

Just a reminder that another inspiring Hop is just around the corner.  Hmmm, Fall and Winter projects - think I am done with extreme hot and humid weather?

I have my 'then' projects selected and I am working on the 'now' project.   I am not fond of working with Christmas fabrics so have selected a white/white Holly and Berry print to go with some seasonal polka dot - gotta love polka dot. 

Posting this off before the next storm takes the power again.

Scrappy Wednesday

I'm a little late to the party.  One I had company and two, I'm not really sewing scraps.  It's quilting marathon time and if I can get Moe to move I can finally get the Black Bear done.  Funny, as much as I moved this quilt around, he always laid back down on the bear.  All the bear paw blocks are scrap greens, so I guess is counts for today.

But my daughter is sewing scraps and I'll share:

Big blocks and big quilts - so not me.  And between her daughter and her - definitely pink lovers which again, is so not me.

We are sweltering waiting for the thunderstorm to hit later tonight.  The  kitties have even been lazing near the AC which they usually avoid.

Monday Making

I got a start on Bonnie Hunter's new leader/ender project and a baggy of scraps to go thru to cut up pieces for the next few to have ready by the machine.  I'm trying to stay with bright colors to keep this a happy quilt.

Then to work more 16 patches with the 1.5" squares.  I need 85 of these (and a lot of 2 other blocks) for this long term project.  

These two projects should really eat up the smallest bits that have just grown beyond containment!  Another week of stormy weather makes for good sewing time.
