I would like to thank Madame Samm for spearheading (or is it pin heading?) this hop and a big thank you to Kristen for being our head cheerleader. Please be sure to visit these sites I am sharing the day with:

When I signed up for this hop I did a bit of a - duh- as I have a few pin cushions (lovingly made for me), but they are for looks - I use pin boxes.  So I fell back on my childhood for inspiration.

Yes, back in my youth and the 4-H program where we were taught a lot of hand work.  We had to make our own pincushion to put in our (handmade) sewing box to bring to each meeting - with all of our supplies.  So I am sharing this project with you - and the true size of these...........

Yes, soda bottle caps!  The nice heavy, taller ones - which for some reason I have a few baggies of.  First we need to make our own templates - I used poster board, but card stock or even a recycled cereal box will do - must be sturdy to handle the tracing. Our base template, You need to use your cap and trace the bottom - flip to it's side and trace around - then add a 1/4".

These are your three templates.  From the bottom template you will need to trace on your fabric for eight (8)  petals.  One (1) of the largest template for the base. And the bottom with added 1/4" , you need one (1) for the flower center. Easy peasy and working right out of the scrap bin.

First you need to prep your petals.  Like making prairie points, fold in half and press and then fold in half again, press.  I used a small craft iron, so if you are using a large iron, be careful of your fingers!
Now pin your petals evenly around your base, right sides facing.  There will be a little space between them, but this will not show when we  baste and tighten up.

Use a heavy thread - I used quilting thread, but carpet or button hole thread will work well.  Knot one end and just do a large baste just a little less than a 1/4" from the edge, catching those petals all the way around.  You can see I managed three (3) stitches a petal and skipped the space inbetween.

Slowly pull your basting and spread the 'crinkling of the petals' evenly around until there is just room to insert the bottle cap.

Pull up tight so the baste edge pulls over the edge of the bottle cap.  Knot your thread off while keeping your work tight - yes, this is a little hard the first time - but these are like potato chips, you can't make just one and you get better at this.  Fluff your petals up and out.

You are going to need two of your templates for this step.  Your template with the 1/4" seam for the flower center - trace onto your fabric (wrongside) and cut out.  And you are going to need your bottom little template used for the petals.

Use a matching thread - I used a white so you can see - knot one end and run a basting stitch an 1/8" around from the edge.

Now insert your petal template and pull your basting tight and knot - don't cut thread.

Press on both sides...............

Remove your template and give another press to make sure nice and flat.

Just a tip - I turned my pincushion base upside down and stitched the flower center to prevent that blasted thread catching on each petal with each stitch.

Once you are about 1/2 way or even 3/4 around, add your stuffing.  I like to use fiber fill as I am never sure some one may be allergic to nuts for the shell stuffing.  And these little guys will stuff nicely with two cotton balls if you don't have stuffing.  Finish stitching down the flower center and knot off.  That's it!!

And like I said, they are like potato chips.  These are for our quilt guild meeting as little gifts for participants in our summer sewing challenge - our interpretation of CHOCOLATE - a little flower cupcake pincushion and a little box of chocolates.

Don't like to work that small - how about a peanut butter jar lid?  Use the same method to make your templates.

Or how about a lid off that spray starch can?

The peanut butter lid pincushion I used a steal wool pad wrapped in a thin layer of batt - something to use to sharpen my pins.  And the spray lid I put some decorative stones in the bottom (left from my daughter's wedding) for some weight as this would be tippy - then some stuffing, then topped it with a steal wool pad wrapped in thin batt. So any lid can be recycled into a cute pincushion - I did find with the larger lid I needed to add another petal so you may need to adjust a little.

A fun project for your guild, or sewing group, or just as a little gift to tuck in a package.

As a thank you for sticking thru this long-winded post, I have a give away.
A jelly roll of 'Make Do and Mend' by Michele D'Amore for Benartex Fabrics.

I would love to hear what your favorite sewing notion is - new or old.  Simply leave a comment, be sure I have a way to contact you (I had a huge amount of no-reply comments on the last hop) and I will ship anywhere.  Comments open until midnight (est) Sept 17th and I will announce the winner (and contact them) on the 18th.

Enjoy the HOP,
Sewingly Yours,
Sharon

  14. Lovely pin cushions Sharon. How great does that collection look on the plate. Almost makes you want to eat one! LOL! Now, for my favourite notion! Most loved or most used? My most used is my quick unpick of course! LOL! My newest notion in the last year is my frixion pen. If I make a mistake when tracing out, I can carefully use the tip of the iron to remove it and trace it again properly. Thanks for the lovely giveaway Sharon. I haven't seen that range before. It's gorgeous.

  15. That looks great! I must try that myself. Thank you for the great tutorial! I love the whole plate of them. It seems so indulgent...Where to put the pins this time. My favourite sewing notion? It has to be my thimble. I do most of my sewing by hand and feel naked without it. Mind you, I have been seen in a lot of places with the thimble still on my hand. Most embarrassing while I went through a customs check at the airport. Luckily the Gambian official seemed to think it had something to do with my wheelchair. I did not correct him!

My favorite sewing notion...wow, that's a hard one, I learned quilting through listing to others, so I got a lot of brilliant notions, let's pick one: the quarter inch sewing foot.
    Thanks for sharing your creativity!

My favorite notion has to be my marking pens. I use them every time I sew. Of course I also use my seam ripper but he is definitely NOT my favorite tool. lol

    ReplyDelete
  30. Wow, your pincushions are so cute! Thanks for sharing. I don't know if you would call it a notion (maybe a tool) and it's not intended for sewing, but I am using a wallpaper seam roller in my sewing room. It's great for pressing while paper piecing and for getting seams to lie open when needed. No burned fingers from the iron!

  31. Beautiful pincushions Sharon. My favourite sewing notion are my various rulers as they make cutting accurately so much easier.

Thank you so much for the very well done tutorial. ;-> My favorite sewing notion my little black featherweight (I hope that counts as a notion), I love the look of her, the calming sound when sewing and of course she's just sooo cute. Bless us all today and everyday. Thanks Sharon, great tutorial!

  35. This pincushion is so cute! And your tutorial is so very well done. Thanks so much for the post. One of my favorite notions is a pair of long tweezers. They come in handy for lots of things, like trying to grasp a short bobbin thread.

  39. These are such adorable little pinnies. I have seen that style before but didn't know how to make it. Thanks for the instructions. My favorite notion is vintage needle books. I love the look of the old lithograph printing. I collect what I can find, but I especially love the Army Navy needle books the best, since I'm an Army wife.

  40. They are adorable Sharon and thanks for the great tutorial !

    ReplyDelete
  41. They are really cute. I love pincushions and making them for friends too but I have to say that my all time favourite is a flower shaped magnet which I just drop my needles and pins onto. If I lose a needle or pin on my bed (which is where I hand sew) then I just wave it over the area until it jumps onto it! Thank you for a great giveaway too.

  50. What a healthy garden you have. They are adorable. Thanks so much for the tutorial. They look so much easier to make than I would have thought.Gonna have to give them a try. My favorite tool is a pair of tweezers that are about 12 - 14 inches long. 53. What a wonderful idea! These gems could be cranked out very quickly to make Christmas stocking stuffers. Beautiful! My favorite sewing notion is masking tape. I lay it on quilt sandwiches and stitch along each side when stitching cross hatch quilting patterns. It is faster than marking lines and the when the tape is removed after stitching, it leaves no residue behind.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Love your pinnies! I have an old jar lid from an antique canning jar. I had planned to just make a 'plain' pinnie with it, but I have a new idea thanks to you!!! My favorite sewing notion (which I no longer have, unfortunately) is a tape measure from my childhood. It was an elephant on a colorful stand. The tape measure was in the stand, and it retracted automatically. One of those neat things from the 1950's!!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Thank you for sharing your instructions; I am quite lazy about using a pin cushion and after reading a funny but serious story yesterday, I realize I need to. I make them all the time for my friends but have never made a cute one for myself. Now's the time. My most used notion is my stitch ripper, picking out my mistakes and as a steadying tool for small pieces going through the machine.

    ReplyDelete
  59. My favorite sewing notion is my walking foot for my sewing machine. Thanks for the great giveaway.

  66. The pin cushions are multiplying like rabbits! I love making bottle cap pc's because of the nice, small size. Love the whole collection! Not sure about a favorite notion... seems like I use my little scissors more than any other notion... always clipping threads and keeping things neat. Thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Great little pincushions. Those are addicting to make, huh? I use my thread clippers more than anything while I am sewing at my machine.

    ReplyDelete
  68. These are sooo fun! And the tutorial is perfect! What an awesome idea as a gift for the quilt guild. As for my favorite tool - the seam ripper: I use it for its regular purpose, plus to pull the bobbin thread up, to hold the end of a seam as it is going through the presser foot...

    ReplyDelete
  69. How adorable! I love zippers :) in bright colors!

    ReplyDelete
  70. These are just adorable! I am adding it to my "to do" wish list!! As for my favorite notion, I'd have to say my leather thimble. I am working on a hand sewing project and I would have very sore fingers without it! Oh and I've discovered those cheap readers from Walmart! Holy Cow, who knew my eyes were so bad! Well those little readers have made a world of difference. Who cares that my kids poke fun at how "old" I look when I wear them. hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  71. What a great idea using a lid. That makes them more sturdy and sit still, not to roll around. Thank you for the full tutorial. I am going to make one (or some) of them.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Those are sew cute! I like all the different sizes, too. What fun! My favorite sewing notion isn't a sewing notion at all. It is a seam roller, used for smoothing wall board seam tape. I use it to 'finger press' when I sew, and for paper piecing. Thanks for the chance, and love those pin cushions.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Your pincushions are so wonderful - I had finally convinced myself to stop saving all the little 'lids' thinking in the past they would make perfect little pincushions...oh dear...best start my collection over! LOL Thanks for sharing...great tute too!!!

  76. Great use of recycling items and little fabric pieces.

My favorite tool is my rotary cutter. Can not imagine quilting without it.

My favorite notion is a magnet with light on the end of a wand - that pulls out to make it longer. I seem to drop pins and needles & with the magnet/light, can locate them before i get out of the sewing area.

    Enjoy the day

I have made dozens of finger pin cushions with lace instead of petals and a round elastic looped through the bottom of the cap (2 holes are drilled in the cap as a first step). 90. I have to make one of your pincushions with the steel wool and pebbles; good ideas. My favorite notion are Wiss snips; I keep them at the sewing machine and can clip the threads very close without damage. Only issue is the tips are very sharp and I've stuck myself once or twice.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Your pincushions are so cute! I will have to try your tute and make some for myself. Right now my favorite notion is a bobbin storage box I found at Joann's. The bobbin snuggles down in the space and won't unravel, etc. What makes it particularly nice is that it has a cover that keeps the bobbins dust free!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Love your tinny, tiny pincushions. Great tutorial!!
My favorite notion is my long curved-tipped tweezers. I use them for everything from threading a difficult needle to cleaning my machine.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Right now I would have to say my favorite sewing notion is my needle threader. I used to think that it was strange when my Mom asked me to thread her machine or needles for her. I don't think it strange at all anymore! Without a needle threader I would probably not be sewing!

    ReplyDelete

  150. Well, my goodness, if those aren't just the cutest little pincushions I've ever seen!!! I'm going to have to try my hand at a few of those :*) As you pointed out, they would make such lovely gifts!

Let's see, my favorite notion.... right now I would say it is my Fons & Porter Glue Stick. I use it to make sure my critical seams stay together until they are stitched, hold down pesky applique pieces that won't behave, hold my binding in place for machine stitching.... Oh my - the list is endless!!!

  153. I started to post a TY for your wonderful pin cushions and amazing tutorial early on Tuesday morning - I mean EARLY and got side tracked and am just getting back to the hop. I love your pin cushions. They are absolutely amazing and thanks for the tutorial. I have it bookmarked. I was a 4-Her for sometime, too. I did many of the cooking and some of the sewing projects and then got interested in other things. It wasn't "cool" to be in 4-H after about 7th grade where I lived - even in rural WV. My brothers did it later because they raised sheep. Maybe it was because I was the only girl in my grade in that community and school up through 5th grade. I remember we had a wonderful recipe for cinnamon rolls. I am visiting my daughter in another state and am enjoying myself immensely with two of my grandboys. I will be trying this recipe for pin cushions as soon as I can home. It is so flexible for any size lid. Great for recycling and I love that you used the stones in the bottom for weight - great idea! You are very creative. As to my favorite sewing notion. I have a seam ripper that my brother made me from a kit. It is the sharpest seam ripper I have ever had. You turn the seam ripper around and it fits in the handle, so you don't ever lose the top (your cover) and the wooden handle is made from wood from his wife's dad's property which was right across from the one-room school my brother and I attended. He had used all the wood from our home property that he had. It just showed up in my mail box earlier this year for no particular event. You are very generous with your give away and sharing your creativity. Thank you for participating.

My favorite notion? Well if I have to pick just one it would be my Fons and Porter 120" tape measure. I use it so much that I should just attach it to my clothing while I'm in my studio. Thanks for the chance to win.

  159. Adorable all grouped together for the picture. I'm afraid I would be in the peanut butter lid group---bigger the better, LOL.

Fav notion?? My clover ripper maybe but my mind went first to a green glass open container that my grandmother told me my great-grandmom used for HER pins. I keep it on the cutting/pressing table area and remember them both that way.
